Blue Hawaii Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic!) – The Mindful Mocktail

After testing this blue hawaii mocktail (aka blue hawaiian!) so many times my fingers turned blue, I guarantee this recipe will be perfect EVERY time. With the ideal balance of sweet tropical fruits and creamy coconut, this easy shake-and-serve non-alcoholic drink can be ready in less than 5 minutes AND it works well as a batch mocktail for guests.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • There are 2 variations: are you a sweet tooth or more savoury? If you’ve been here awhile you’ll know that I avoid sickly sweet drinks and much prefer my mocktails with nutritional benefits, so I’ve created TWO non-alcoholic blue hawaii options – a classic version and a nourishing version that is lower in sugar and better for you.
  • You can make it for a crowd: YES, this recipe can be made as a batch or pitcher mocktail.
  • It’s simple to make: with no bartending skills required, this mocktail is as easy as shake and serve!
  • It’s a show-stopper: the stunning blue hue, the garnish and the light creamy texture makes virgin blue hawaiians absolute show stoppers. Just imagine serving a tray of these at a baby shower or party – hosting perfection!

Ingredients – What You Need

The biggest choice you’ll have to make when creating this recipe is which base ingredient to choose. A non-alcoholic blue hawaiian is traditionally made with blue curacao syrup, which is a great choice if you want your mocktail to be as close to the classic as possible.

If you’d prefer something a little more nourishing and lower in sugar, I recommend blue spirulina powder, because it’s rich in nutrients and contains antioxidant properties.

  • Option 1: Non-alcoholic blue curaçao syrup I personally love the brand Monin, which can be purchased on Amazon.
  • Option 2: blue spirulina powder I’ve used the Unicorn Superfoods powder which is great and there are other brands available online too. Tip: be sure to purchase blue spirulina, not the more widely available green if you want to achieve that gorgeous blue!
  • Lime juice: I always recommend fresh where possible, but bottled can also be used.
  • Pineapple juice
  • Coconut water: be sure to choose one without added sugar or flavorings – coconut water is naturally sweet enough. Don’t forget to check out my coconut water mocktail too!
  • Coconut milk or cream of coconut: this choice is up to you! Coconut milk will result in a creamier milder flavor, cream of coconut is better if you like something sweeter.
  • Optional: non-alcoholic rum. Traditionally, blue hawaiians are made with rum. Your blue hawaii mocktail will still have plenty of flavor without it, but alcohol-free spirits do add a layer of complexity.

How to make a blue hawaii mocktail

If using the blue spirulina: place the blue spirulina in a small bowl with 1-2 teaspoons of hot water then stir gently to combine. Don’t worry there are still a few lumps, the shaking process will help to dissolve them.

Place your blue spirulina or blue curaçao syrup in your shaker with the lime and pineapple juice.

Add the coconut water and coconut milk (or cream of coconut) along with 3-4 cubes of ice. Shake well to combine.

Fill your glass with ice and strain the mixture in. Garnish with extra fruit and/or edible flowers. Serve immediately.

How to make a non-alcoholic blue hawaiian punch

Yes! This can be made into a punch or pitcher recipe if you wish. Simply increase the number of serves in the recipe card below, which will help to calculate the amounts of each ingredient you need. Then place all ingredients into a blender instead of a shaker. You might need to do this in batches depending on how many serves you’re making.

Expert tips and tricks

  • If you have time to chill your ingredients prior to making your blue hawaii mocktail I’d highly recommend it – warm ingredients mixed with iced in the shake can dilute and you can lose some depth of flavor.
  • If making the punch: when left sitting for a long time, the coconut milk (or cream) can separate slightly from the rest of the ingredients, so I would recommend stirring the punch every now and then to ensure the ingredients are properly mixed.
  • I often find tropical mocktails WAY too sweet, so I tend to add a little more lime juice to balance this out. Feel free to experiment with the amount of lime juice to find what works for you.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Servings: 1

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients (except the garnishes) to a shaker with 3-4 cubes of ice. Shake for around 15 seconds to combine, then strain over fresh ice and garnish with extra fruit and/or edible flowers. Serve immediately.

Notes

Note 1 – lime juice: adjust this amount to ½ ounce (15 ml) lime juice if you’re more of a sweet tooth. I find tropical mocktails very sweet and will often use extra lime juice to balance it out, so find an amount that works for you. If unsure, start with ½ (15 ml) oz, shake, have a little sip from the shaker, then add more and shake again if you wish.
Note 2 – coconut cream or cream of coconut: coconut cream will give a milder, creamier flavor whereas cream of coconut will offer additional sweetness.
Try my nourishing Blue Hawaiian Mocktail:
▪️ ¼ teaspoon blue spirulina powder
▪️ 1-2 teaspoons hot water
▪️ 1 oz (30 ml) lime juice
▪️ 2 oz (60 ml) pineapple juice
▪️ 2 oz (60 ml) coconut water
▪️ 1 tablespoon coconut milk
▪️ Optional: 1 oz (30 ml) non-alcoholic rum
Place the blue spirulina and hot water in a small bowl and stir to combine. Leave to cool for a few minutes then add it to a shaker with the remaining ingredients and some ice. Shake for around 15 seconds to combine, then strain over fresh ice and garnish with fruit and/edible flowers.
A note on color: the drink pictured in this post uses blue spirulina as the base. If you use blue curacao, the end result will be more of an aqua color.
